Seems like Judy is genuinely happy whenever Liza is around. Those freaking jingling bracelets are driving me crazy. Does she have to wear 12 of them and keep shaking her hands every damn sentence. I wish movies THESE DAYS would be like this. I decided to watch Judy right after the Oscar nominations were announced because Renée Zellweger got some recognition in the Best Actress category and all I have been hearing for months is that Zellweger completely steals this film. She absolutely does, and I'm pretty confident the Oscar will land in her lap, although Scarlet Johansson is a potential threat for her work in Marriage Story.
Everything else in the movie doesn't work quite as well as Zellweger's performance, but they were still good enough for me to come away from the film and say that I had a positive experience with it. The rest of the cast fit into their roles nicely, but none of them can compete with the lead. Perhaps that's an unfair comparison, but Zellweger is just that good.
The music was catchy and well choreographed, but there wasn't really enough of it and I expected far more considering what the central plot is about.
The directing by Rupert Goold is exceptional, the script is sharp, and the editing is also something which I admired. There are a lot of great pieces to Judy, but none of them really came together to make a film that I absolutely loved. It was still a good time though, and definitely not a waste of two hours.
Overall, while Judy certainly wasn't a boring film, it's not quite entertaining enough to be top-tier for me. Having said that, I still admired quite a number of aspects and would recommend it to most people.
